Ottawa, ON – The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS have signed OF STEVE BROWN to a contract for the 2017 season.
BROWN, 30, has been one of the most consistent hitters in independent baseball since his first season with the Golden League’s Edmonton Capitals in 2010.
The Barranquilla, Colombia native has spent the past four years with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, and in 2016 he batted .276 with eight homeruns and 41 RBI in 78 games.
In his seven-year independent league career, Brown has a .278 lifetime batting average with 78 homeruns and 330 RBI in 571 games. His most productive season came in 2013 when he hit 19 homeruns and drove in 58 runs for the Aigles.
“I’m very happy to acquire Steve because he’s a great middle of the order bat who will drive in runs,” says Champions manager Hal Lanier. “He’s the whole package, he hits homeruns, has a great arm, can run, and is familiar with the Can-Am League.”
Brown was originally signed by the Houston Astros in 2006 and played as high as Single-A Lancaster in the California League. In addition to Edmonton and Trois-Rivieres, Brown also played one season with the Quebec Capitales.
