Champions Hire New Pitching Coach, Bring Back Boucher and Lemieux

Ottawa, ON – The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS and manager Hal Lanier have finalized their coaching staff for the 2017 season.

The Champions have hired MIGUEL GOMEZ as their new pitching coach following the departure of Billy Horn to the Long Island Ducks, while SEBASTIEN BOUCHER returns as hitting coach and JARED LEMIEUX returns as first base/outfield coach.

GOMEZ, 45, has a wealth of coaching experience, both at the professional and high school levels. He spent the past 19 years coaching at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces, NM, the last 12 of those as head coach. In that time he led the Trojans to six district titles, one state runner-up, and made the playoffs every year.

He got his first professional job as bench coach of the Pecos League’s Las Cruces Vaqueros in 2011, and then was promoted to manager in 2012. He joined the American Association’s El Paso Diablos in 2013 as an assistant under former Toronto Blue Jays manager Tim Johnson, and then assisted with the San Diego Padres’ AAA affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas, in 2015 and 2016.

“I’m really excited to come up to Ottawa and pick up where Billy Horn left off,” says Gomez. “I bring a lot of knowledge, a lot of intensity, and our guys are going to compete their tails off and continue a winning tradition.

BOUCHER, 35, returns for his third season as player/hitting coach for the Champions. In 2016 the Gatineau, QC native broke Can-Am League records for career hits, runs scored, and RBI and single season walks.

“I’m excited to get back on the field and defend our title,” says Boucher.

LEMIEUX, 33, also returns for his third season as first base coach, outfield coach, and batting practice pitcher extraordinaire.

“Last year we went out with a bang so I’m excited to come back and carry over the momentum,” says Lemieux.
